Nikko Toshogu Shrine used to be the temple that holds important religious ceremonies for the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Edo Period. It was founded in 1250.

It was recognised as the UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. Since then, the number visitors have increased tremendously , currently, Nikko accommodates about 2.5 millions visitors every year.

There are few ways that you can get to the temple:

Walking – From Nikko JR Station it takes 30 minutes on foot. But the walking path is uphill, hence, could be quite tiring
By Bus – You may take the Word Heritage bus from Nikko JR station which costs 290 yen to Omotesando 表参道
By Car – Parking around Toshogu Shrine and Sanrinnoji are limited and most of time unavailable (especially during the weekend). it is recommended that you park your car around Futarayama Shrine or make use of local municipal’s parking lot near the Nikko Kosugi Memorial Museum
